I totally agree. I love seeing how a story varies as reported in the ny post, ny times, and la times for example. It definitely gets me thinking about what tthe issues behind the text are, and forming ideas in response.

Yes, and the US is a federal republic, with a very specific electoral system to boot...so many other types of democracy exist before we get to non-democracy lol

I can relate, i've been on both extremes of the news comsumption spectrum at various phases in my life. As a political writer, i try to read the op ed of a national paper every day. After that, i like to skim the wsj fro t page, the nyt biz section on mondays ("media mondays"), nyt science section on tuesdays, and the nyt magazine on sundays. I am from a family of newspaper editors so i look at it somewhat critically, but i save online reading & gossip mags for certain days/moments when i want to zone out and not read critically. The la times is a fantastic paper these days, website still a tad wonky on mobile but no paywall & amazing writers/content on every level. If i read nothing else i read their op ed. Also for entrepenuers i have heard anecdotally that reading a financial paper daily is a must.

Great quote. Two thoughts. One, i hope irving was referring to the medioocre tabloids as opposed to real papers. I've had the opportunity to attend some of the social functions for pulitzer judges in the past and they get some really quality content. Second, that cheesburger metaphor is hilarious in today's context of lolcat memes/speak/etc

I think 99.99% of news in all papers, tabloid or not, falls under that quote.

Unless your job is to directly action the news (e.g. if you're a trader, in which case I hope you have better sources than newspapers), "news" makes zero difference to your life, no matter how greatly written it might be. This is true of all papers, not just tabloids.

I wouldnt have called whoever it was the guy in the article was quoted as callin multiple times until she sounded irritated. Yeah the government appears to be at fault but regardless this is not the time to be irritating in such a way. Having a lawyer who is golf buddies with that lady's boss would probably make a bigger impression, not that the jotform guy would have known that at the time, but nonetheless. Reminds me of the old maxim "keep your friends close and your enemies closer." anywayz this whole debacle is frustrating but hopefully it will illuminate some of the gov't's tactics to those of us who were still in the dark

I kind of agree, i felt a little weird about him sayong all that stuff with his full name behind it, but then i think back to all the clubs i snuck into as a teen and talked my way into once i was of age. In the clubs once security or the doorman vouches for you you're golden so the trick is to know the staff well. Then when there's a pr company flack managing a tight ass door you've got support of the bouncers if you're not waved in by pr. I'd hate to see door crashing involve breaking any laws or hurting charities when it is so easy to attend a list events via befriending every doorman /bouncer in town on a text message basis. Cant say i have the energy for much of that anymore however. Once i hit 25 i started wanting to workin the day and party for my own enjoyment at night. Schmoozing 24/7 while also working on a project is exhausting

Onswipe seduced me too at first but it really is impossible to update or troubleshoot ( God forbid tweak the design...) when it hardly ever works on any of my devices. I didn't realize others felt the same..this discussion has really articulated a lot of my frustration with feeling like there are 8 different internets depending on the device and how recently it was updated

Although I haven't tested this in any meaningful way, I'd be willing to bet OnSwipe simply relies to heavily on JavaScript. My iPad 1 struggles with any page loaded up with scripts, even ones that seem like they might not have any at all. For instance, news websites are often chock full of scripts for analytics, social media plugins, and advertisements.

OnSwipe probably works pretty well on desktop machines where it's developed, but today's tablets simply can't handle the processing and memory requirements necessary to make it an enjoyable experience.

Id believe it just based on the ridiculous Amount of heat the mac laptops seem to generate. Im constantly turning mine off to cool down

> I'm constantly turning mine off to cool down

use http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23049/smcfancontrol - when the thing gets hot, just increase the fan speed (to 5700 rpm or whatever you machine's max is) for a minute or two, and then everything gets back to normal.

They generate just as much heat as other systems with the same chip and chipset, but the metal case is much better at conducting heat.

I remember hearing about switching to voip when the 2nd gen ipod touch was getting popular, and i was intrigued enough to put off any handset upgrades on my tmobile account in order to stay out of contract in case this voip thing took off. In the 3 years since i have barely touched my mobile phone in favor of the ipod touch, but i keep the mobile for 911. i hope a fix for that comes up cuz even at the cheapest cell plan it is still a decent 50 bucks/month that i'd much rather throw at a mobile hotspot or data only plan

If you're in the US, then any phone you have has 911 service no matter whether you're subscribed to a plan or not. You can pop the SIM card out entirely and still call 911.

In the UK I gather any mobile - even without a sim, even locked - can make emergency calls. I may be wrong but I think it's a European law?

This reminded me of the people in egypt (i think it was, or somewhere near) that named their baby facebook cuz he was born during the arab spring. The reddit story is more poignant to me, maybe cuz the only other mainstream media coverage of reddit was that whole jailbait debacle. Nice to see the site redeem itself..maybe redditors really do get the whole karma concept after all
