Tanzania may have the lowest GDP of the three port countries mentioned but Dar es Salaam has the largest population compared to the smaller cities of Mombasa and Durban. From what little I understand the Tanzanian government may be in the best place politically to use these stress tests to focus more attention on port health and capabilities. I'd be happy for anyone else to weigh in.

The government isn't really in a good place to capitalise on this, they recently signed a deal with DP World to operate part of the Dar es Salaam port. Sentiment on the deal has been pretty negative (massive understatement of the year, no official polls but anecdotally, everyone was pretty pissed with it). https://www.ft.com/content/f5776df5-9375-438f-bbeb-bc7e8c296...

Considering this existing agreement, the murky dealings surrounding it, the circumstances we found out about it (it was leaked). I don't see them seeking anyone's attention, or even making a show of the increased burden to show that DP World or other "investors" are needed.

Not sure why population matters.

> Maersk said vessels routed around the Cape will as far as possible try to fuel at origin or destination.

> “In case there is a need for bunkering en route, it would be decided on a case by case basis with Walvis Bay (Namibia) or Port Louis (Mauritius) being the top options,” a spokesperson said.

I grew up in Walvis Bay and back then I could cycle from one end to the other in well under 30min. Last census says 62k pop.

Oh whoa! I've always wanted to visit Namibia! How similar is it to South Africa?

If you enjoy travelling long distances surrounded by unspoiled flora and fauna, and settling in for the night at small unpretentious places run by welcoming and passionate people you will love it.

Ngl that sounds amazing. I'm assuming the law and order situation is a night and day difference compared to across the border in ZA?

ActivityPub potentially helps to solve this. With enough well-exposed/accessible connections to sites or posts you might be able to traverse around a network and collect similar items. There are a lot of other challenges there but it's a possibility.

I'm not affiliated but I came across some software called Yunohost (https://yunohost.org/) recently, a Debian-based OS that tries to be user-friendly for self-hosting applications. Not sure how much it's being maintained.

It's very active. I have been using it for years and they update often enough.

One of the more compelling new features looks to be Live Translate built into the keyboard for 48 languages using Private Compute Core. I'd be curious about accuracy but I'm glad things moving forward in that space.

Like the render on the Lockheed Martin site the first thing that came to my mind was Africa. This could be a solution for heavy-load cheap transport across huge swaths of land where road or rail infrastructure would be inefficient or too expensive to develop. It could help extend commerce beyond coastal regions both on the continent and worldwide.

Are there any efforts to standardize a way to default to a dark color scheme if a website has it?

This is wonderful. Long ago MS Publisher had templates that allowed you to build paper airplanes. I remember discovering this as a kid in elementary school with my friends.

After switching from Android to iOS one of the things I missed most was Google Now in comparison to Siri. Before I was far more likely to say "Okay Google" and get surprisingly contextual results.

I've used mostly Android phones in the past I was trying to decide whether to get the Z5 Compact or finally try Apple with the iPhone SE. After nearly a year with my first iPhone I'm ready to switch back. How has your experience been with that phone?

The hardware may still be prohibitive cost-wise and/or underdeveloped, but mixed reality headsets may eventually be a potential solution for this problem.
