Isn't it designed to be _just_ good enough to stop people using (and paying for) Slack instead?

That's the problem, it never managed to be that

Both Teams and Slack are problematic, we are using IRC at our small team, and it's been just better, the nature of IRC allows easy bot/scripting, wich is all you need for your integration needs
