I've been using Shush[0] for years as a quick and easy way to mute and unmute my mic as needed for meetings with a global hotkey. It's last update was 2014, and it has only recently stopped working with latest macOS (rather impressive).
Does anyone know of any similar solutions?

You can toggle the mic with a hotkey, and it adds a menubar icon/menu so you can see the current mic status at a glance.
