No. It does not happen rarely. I do it all the time. (I realize that other commenters have expressed the same sentiment among other things, but for me this is the key element to emphasize.)

I suspect the statistics on feature usage are slanted toward trivial repos that are being used like SVN, or that are not being used as part of a distributed workflow. "Important" doesn't mean "used by the majority of projects."
